will bring your mate to visit your homeland.”
“I appreciate your offer, but I can’t foresee a visit anytime soon.”
As he spoke, Vencel moved to stand close to Mai. He didn’t stand
directly in front of her but close enough to prevent anyone from
having a chance of hurting her.
“We are trying hard to overcome the old and outdated traditions.
But there has been some resistance from the older pack members.”
Marika glanced over at her unconscious father. Mai had to wonder at
what kind of parent would trade away his daughter’s life with such
ease. The way Marika looked at her father, Mai didn’t think that she
carried much respect for him.

“I will collect our belongings and head back home as soon as
possible. Again, I apologize for the insult to both of you and your
mate.
“Thank you.” Vencel reached over and clasped Mai’s hand,
Gaspar took the other one.
“It was nice to meet you, Mai. I hope that we get a chance to get
to know each other.”
“That would be nice, Marika. I would be interested in learning
about your pack traditions.”
“It would be in everyone’s best interests if the Bükk pack stays
away from our mate, Marika.”
“I understand your concerns, Gaspar, and I will make certain your
wishes are known.”
There were no more niceties when then left. Vencel looked
furious as he moved down the hall, his claws still extended from
between his fingers. They were thick as a finger at the base, but then
they tapered down to a lethal tip. Mai reached up a finger and stroked
the length of one. Strangely, she didn’t feel a single moment of fear
touching such a wicked-looking weapon.
“I swear you’re going to get the spanking I’ve been promising
you.” Gaspar’s words shocked her out of her claw fascination
“What did I do?”
“Why would you step in front of me like that? Do you know what
kind of danger you could have been in?”
“I can imagine, but I wasn’t about to let her look the two of you
over like that. It pissed me off.” Mai tried to pull away from Gaspar,
but he wouldn’t allow her to. Instead, they walked more quickly down
the hallway and out into the lobby. Vencel lead them, and Gaspar
stayed close to her back. “Are there any more?”
She could see Vencel’s head shake a negative. “I don’t smell
anyone. Gaspar?”
“No, we’re in the clear. They have more wolves with them, but
they aren’t stalking us right now, and Mai’s behavior will make them

think twice before doing anything. I imagine they will steer clear for
now. They know where we live.
“Why would you say I’ll make them think twice?”
“Because you’re human and nowhere near as strong as us. Since
you were willing to step in front of me and glare Marika down, they
will have reason to question what other talents you have.”
Vencel glared over his shoulder at his brother. “Explain to me
why I’m not driving my fist in your face for letting her put herself in
that much danger? Why didn’t you stop her Gaspar?”
“Because it’s never a bad thing for someone like that to think
twice before attacking.”
Fear gripped Mai’s heart at the possibility that they might be
attacked. What if either of them got hurt trying to protect her?
“I’m going to go and have a quick talk with Albert.” Vencel
stopped and pulled Mai into his arms for a quick kiss. “I’ll meet you
at the shack.
Gaspar wrapped his arm around her shoulder and led her out into
the sun. “What’s the shack?”
“It’s a small restaurant a few doors down. That’s where the hotel
gets its room service. You’ll love it. It’s where we go when it’s
Vencel’s turn to cook.”
Mai felt the tension disappear from her shoulders. Gaspar
wouldn’t make jokes if they were still in danger.
“Is it that Vencel can’t cook or doesn’t want to?”
“A bit of both, which works out because I hate to clean and he is
almost OCD about keeping everything tidy.”
Mai wasn’t certain how she would fit in to their lives or if it was
too soon to be even thinking that way. That Timur Denescz certainly
wasn’t impressed with her being with them. She glanced around her
as they walked and took a good look at the town of Ecstasy Lake. It
wasn’t a big place by any means, but it looked pretty. They passed a
candy shop and an ice cream parlor before reaching the restaurant.

milling about the small main street. Should she even be thinking this
way? What if this didn’t work out with Gaspar and Vencel? Maybe
she should be looking more at a larger town or city?
“I can practically hear you stressing about something, Mai. Don’t
worry so much.” Gaspar opened the door of a small building and
pressed his hand to her lower back as he led her in.
The smell of fresh baked mince pies hit her senses and made her
mouth water. “Oh, it smells so good in here.”
“I know. Wait till Vencel catches up with us and watch his face
when he walks in here.”
An older woman called out to them as soon as they entered.
“Welcome home, Gaspar.” She looked over Mai and her smile grew.
“I hope you and your brother are planning to stay around for a bit
now.”
Mai looked around the restaurant as they moved to a table by the
window. Painted in soft colors and floral wall paper, it looked more
like a quaint tea shop then a shack.
“It’s a good possibility, Catherine. I’d like you to meet Mai
Bennett. Vencel and I are trying to convince her to stay up here with
us.”
