About the Author
Iqtidar Alam Khan retired as a professor of history from Aligarh Mus-
lim University in 1994. His early research concerned the political
process within the Mughal Empire, leading to two monographs, Mirza
Kamran: A Biographical Study (Bombay, 1963) and The Political Biog-
raphy of a Mughal Noble: Life of Mun im Khan, Khan-i Khanan (New
Delhi, 1973), and a large number of papers published in leading jour-
nals. Later, he widened the area of his research to cover themes like the
concept of India in Alberuni, Abdul Qddus Gangohi s relations with
state authorities, medieval archaeology, the role of middle classes in
Mughal India, gunpowder technology in South Asia, and so forth. His
latest book, Gunpowder and Firearms: Warfare in Medieval India (2004),
attempts to provide a new comprehension of the impact of gunpowder
on Indian polity and society during the medieval period. Iqtidar Alam
Khan was the general president of the Indian History Congress s 59th
session held at Bangalore in 1997.
